Youth

The Youth Committee is responsible for the following:

Dianella Secondary College

DSC is our allocated link school in the Rotary linked school programme. It is the most culturally diverse secondary school in WA. This of course presents significant challenges, however, it is run by a highly motivated team, led by principle Debra Unwin and is achieving excellent results. The school motto is; dream, believe, succeed.

Rotary Four Way Test Speech Competition Year 10

The Rotary Four Way Test speaking competition encourages teachers and students from our link school to take part in this public speaking, confidence building and ethics consideration opportunity. It is a state-wide competition with club heats taking place at the end of Term 2 followed by a zone, district then a State final being conducted in conjunction with fellow Western Australian District 9465.

Rotary WA Driver Education (RWADE)

While DSC was unable to participate in 2023 thanks to the efforts of Lindsay Francis, we were able to still hold the event with 170 students from Como High School attending.

Stan Perron Award

School nominee, Sarah Stramsek was successful in achieving the award in 2023.  Sarah was deemed to have fulfilled all of the high aims for the award. She visited the club and gave an eloquent talk to the club in our Youth Focused Meeting on 17 January 2024.

Rotary Youth Exchange RYE

Inbound

In late July 2024 our club welcomed a student from Sicily and he will be in Perth for 12 months

Outbound

Our current outbound student is in Brno in the Czech Republic.  From his reports, he is having an amazing experience, everything that the RYE aims to achieve.

More information about the program is at https://exchangestudentwa.org.au/

National Youth Science Forum - NYSF

No student applied directly to the club to attend NYSF. We were provided with a student who was keen to attend the forum in Canberra in January. He attended a meeting in February where he reported on his experience and how his ideas for the future had been widened.

Rotary Youth Exchange Function at Parliament House

In April 2024 an afternoon tea for inbound Exchange students, members of their host clubs and five consuls was held at Parliament House. The group was joined by inbound students from interstate who were going on the North West Safari and two leaders. Some members of RCMB also attended. Alanna Clohesy hosted the afternoon tea and provided the students with an introduction to the workings of the WA Parliament.
