History - Nardine Refuge Centre
Nardine domestic violence refuge was started in 1974 making it the oldest refuge centre in Western Australia and the second oldest in Australia. It was commenced by volunteers who had a lot of goodwill.
In its first year, Nardine accommodated 138 women and 172 children and turned away 272 women and 567 children.
In 1975 the Commonwealth Government stepped in and provided some funds to support the refuge, and it
continues to provide a place of safety and support even though the demand for support for women and
children continues to grow.
