“Keeping the Elephants In Line”
John Lemon was appointed Director of Life Sciences at Perth Zoo in 2025. With a career spanning more than three decades in the industry, John is one of Australia’s most well-regarded and experienced conservationists.
He began zookeeping in 1989, specializing as species coordinator for both Cheetah and African Painted Dogs. With this expertise, he travelled all over the world and gained experience in South Africa, USA, New Zealand and across Australia.
In 2003, John started his career with Perth Zoo as a keeper before working his way up into the Manager of Zoology role, and also serves as the Chair of the Zoo and Aquarium Association Australasia's Accreditation Committee.
Now, as Director of Life Sciences, he oversees the care and operations for the 1300 native and exotic animals that call our Perth Zoo home.
John has long been a devoted advocate for wildlife and importantly, his skills and passion will help bring the Zoo’s strategic vision to life.
