Hon Kate Doust, MLC will speak today on “The Role and Challenges of being President of the WA Legislative Council”. 

 

Kate Doust,  was elected to the Legislative Council in 2001 to represent the South Metropolitan Region and has retained her seat at subsequent elections.

Prior to being elected to President of the Legislative Council on 23 May 2017, Kate held positions as Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Chair of the Standing Committee on Uniform Legislation and Statutes Review, and was a member of the Legislative Council Standing Committee on Procedure and Privileges. She was also shadow Minister for Industrial Relations; Commerce; Information Communications Technology; Small Business; and Electoral Affairs.

Kate holds the honour of being the first female President elected to the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia.

Her employment history prior to entering Parliament included shop assistant, insurance and library clerk, and union official with the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association of WA (SDA WA).

Kate also held a number of elected positions, including general treasurer of the SDA, member of the national council of the SDA, vice-president of UnionsWA and board member of the State Training Board.

Her community involvement includes representation on behalf of her constituents on a wide range of issues. Kate is on a number of boards, including Carson Street School, Canning College and William Langford Community House.

She has a keen interest in supporting women in the workplace and is a champion for women in science and technology.
